Today, I'm bringing you a special lesson on how to draw sad facial expressions. This lesson, though complex, will be simplified to make it easier for you to understand. We will be drawing one of the most important facial expressions, but using the same style and techniques, we can do the same with other facial expressions. So, get your notebooks and pencils ready, and let's begin.
First step
• We draw a circle for the entire face.
• We draw a line from the middle of the face, and two parallel lines at the eye area.
• We draw a line starting from the eye and heading towards the chin, and these two lines should meet at the chin.

Step two
Here we will begin to draw the eye, eyebrow and lips, as they are among the most important elements that highlight the expression of sadness.
• We make sure to draw the eye half-closed.
• We draw the eyebrow while it is slanted, especially at its end.
• The lips should curve downwards.
• We complete the drawing of the entire face, and add the ears as well.

Explanation of the eye
As I told you in the introduction to the lesson, the eye is the most important element in the face that highlights the feeling of sadness, and now I will explain it to you with pictures and steps.
• We draw the upper part of the eye, which is considered the upper eyelid. Upper Eyelid.
• We add the lower section of the eye, making sure it is half closed.
• We draw the upper eyelid as a light line.
• We draw the pupil inside the eye, but only the lower half of it is shown.
• Finally, we draw the eyebrow.

Explanation of the lens or pupil
Why should we draw the eyes partially closed? The reason is that when a person is sad, they close their eyes due to grief and sorrow, and this will make the deep emotion more apparent to the audience. For example, when a person is surprised, they open their eyes wide, and when they are afraid, they close their eyes. Therefore, we should pay attention to this point.

Explanation of details
In order to achieve a deeper impact from the expression of sadness and grief, we must add some details.
• We draw some wrinkles under the eye, and this is suitable for characters who are in a lot of pain.
• We draw a crease near the end of the front eyebrow to increase the depth even more.
• We make sure to draw the eyebrow so that it is angled downwards and close to the eye.

Mouth explanation
We have several ways to draw a sad mouth when we draw sad features on an anime and manga character, and I will give you three examples.
• The detached or cut mouth, where we draw the mouth and erase it from the middle, and this is a common type in the world of anime.
• The mouth is full, but we draw it slanted downwards to highlight the sadness.
• The wavy mouth, we draw it from the middle and it curves downwards.

Examples of mouth drawing
Here I will show you five examples of lip drawing, which will help you get various ideas.
visible teeth
• A mouth that is closed from top to bottom to indicate discomfort.
• The mouth curves downwards and is cut in the middle to suggest coldness.
• A pursed mouth with teeth showing, which indicates anger along with a feeling of sadness.
• A grimacing mouth, which is a posture resembling teeth grinding.

facial enhancements
After completing the facial features drawing, we can add more simple details, which have a big impact.
