Hello, my dear friends, in a fun and beautiful lesson, about how to draw water or the surface of water, or draw the sea in the style of Japanese anime. The lesson will be easy and the style, as I have accustomed you, will be simple but effective, and you will like it. The beautiful thing is that you can draw and invent in it as you wish.

The background drawing I always use is Clip Studio PaintYou can use Photoshop Or any drawing program for computers, Apple phones, or Android devices.
First step
- We add New Raster Layer.
- We choose Pencil (Pencil Tool > Pencil) From the tools menu Tool Property.
- We define the dark gray color from Color Wheel.
- Then we draw zigzag lines connected to each other, with curves at their ends, which represent the natural movement of water.
Step two
Within the same layer, we draw more and more closed curves, but this time they are smaller than before.
Choose the method and shapes you want to draw. There is no need to adhere to specific shapes; it is enough that they be circular drawings that are almost closed on top of each other.
Step three
We color the entire page blue, in whatever shade you like; it will reflect the water's surface. We can add Simple color gradient (Gradient Tool) Depending on your needs, this will enhance the beauty of the drawing.
- We add New Raster Layer.
- We choose a sky blue color from Color Wheel.
- We determine Fill Tool / Paint Bucket.
- We color the entire page with this color.
Step four
As we previously drew a ”sketch” of the water surface waves, in this stage we draw in white, on a new layer.
- We add New Raster Layer.
- We choose Pen Tool (Pen Tool > G-pen or Mapping Pen).
- We draw exactly according to the previous sketch.
We can reduce the layer of blue sky, or hide it when we draw.
Step five
Then, once we've finished that, we copy the same layer we drew in white like this:
- We identify the water ripple layer using Selection Tool > Auto Select.
- We add New Raster Layer Under it.
- We determine Fill Tool / Paint Bucket.
- We fill it with a slightly dark blue color, and the outline will take on color with us.
- Then drag the layer to the left or down depending on the direction of the shadow across Move ToolSo that it gives us a shadow under the water's surface.
Step six
In the shadow layer, we add an effect Blur (Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur)In order to lessen the intensity of the shadow.
Optional step: At the edges of the water surface, which I have marked in red, you can fill them and thicken them so that they look smoother. You can skip this step.
A closer look
These are two pictures that are closer to clarification (the first before, and the second after), after we colored the water cavities white, so that we get a slightly smooth shape.

Here you can easily notice the difference, as the cavities appear slightly filled, by choosing Pen Tool (Pen Tool > G-pen or Mapping Pen)Then select the same white color from Color WheelAnd we begin packing.
Step seven
As a final step, you can add some glitter, sparkle, or even a reflection of sunlight:
- We add New Raster Layer.
- We choose Glitter/Sparkle Brush Tool From the list Sub Tool.
- We determine the color white or yellow from Color Wheel.
- We press with the pen or mouse, and a beautiful, smooth sparkle will appear, as if the surface of the water or sea is shining from the sunlight.
