Welcome to today's lesson! We'll learn how to draw a manga character on a pre-drawn background using a simple and easy technique that even beginners can apply. There are many techniques for drawing characters on ready-made backgrounds, but I've chosen a practical, tried-and-tested, and fun method to make it easier for you to get started with drawing a manga character for your next project.
First step
We begin by preparing the background for our manga character. You can choose ready-made backgrounds you've previously drawn, or use the free backgrounds available on the blog to make practicing easier. In this example, I chose a background of a train seat for our manga character to sit on.

Step two
The first practical step is to draw the initial structure of the body posture. Draw two simple lines: the first line for the upper part of the body, and the second line for the lower part. Then draw a horizontal line representing the shoulders, and another line representing the pelvic area.
We will see the shape of two connected triangles, and the point where the two triangles meet is the waistline.
The most important step here is aligning the lower section with the background, as it's the point where the manga character meets the backdrop. Draw a rectangle aligned with the angle of the seat to define the sitting position, then apply the same principle to the shoulders to ensure the drawing blends seamlessly with the scene.
Step three
- Next, we add a new layer and draw the initial shape of the body on it with more detailed outlines. The most important points to define are the neck and legs.
- We draw a circle in the middle of the shoulders with an X mark to help us determine the direction of the body, and we do the same thing at the bottom to determine the direction of the legs before drawing them.
Step four
- To draw the neck, we draw a cylindrical shape from the bottom of the neck circle upwards. This makes it easier for us to determine the size and length of the neck in a harmonious way.
- From the line that separates the circle, we draw a line downwards that neatly separates the upper part of the body.
- We repeat the same steps when drawing the legs and arms, using the guidelines and initial markings to determine the direction and movement.
Step five
- We draw a line from the bottom of the neck circle, upwards, with an X mark, until we get a cylindrical shape, through which we will be able to draw the neck easily.
- Using the line that separates the circle, we will draw a line downwards, in order to separate the upper part of the body.
We follow the same steps for the legs and arms.
Step six
For the face, we draw a circle above the body and add a small rectangle to its right side, then draw a line that divides the circle in half vertically, and divide the rectangle in half horizontally to determine the location of the nose and mouth.
Step seven
We draw two parallel lines representing the eye positions, and from there we draw an inverted triangle to neatly define the lower jawline.
Step eight
We will use the vertical line that divides the circle in half. It also helps us to draw the hair, as we start from there outwards to draw the hair in the manga style.
Step nine
After clearly defining the structure, we begin to draw the details of the manga character in full, where the character's features become clearly visible after these foundational steps.
Step ten
For inking, we use black ink and a pen. G PenIt is an ideal pen for inking manga lines with high precision, and we draw each part in a separate layer. .

- A layer for inking additions such as accessories or bags.
Step eleven
After inking, we move to the tones stage. We color the character using white and shades of gray, while the hair is black with white highlights that give it a more beautiful look.
Step Twelve
To add shadows, We copy the character drawing layer and add a Multiply effect. On top of that, we color the layer light gray to add realistic shadows without losing the inking details.
